 AVENGERS #105

Foggy Recollection or Convenient Memory Loss?

I don't remember but one dang thing about this issue and it wasn't the cover because...

it was coverless when I found it. I THINK...

It could be I was so distracted as a 11 year old when I saw Scarlet Witch's.... uh, protruding bust line,

that I completely forgot the cover. But seriously, this is really the only thing I remember about the issue.

As I re-read it here, I can SEE WHY... it's a dumb story.

Hawkeye was a character I never thought much of. Occasionally he made me laugh at the silly smart ass things they'd have him say, but... he was a really lame superhero, who always seemed to be the guy who had to have ONE MORE word balloon to add to a panel.

Really... Black Panther should've just punched him in the mouth.

And the faux Shakespearian dialogue they'd give to Thor...ugh.

I know most comic nerds LOVED that (my son included, who is a HUGE Thor fan),

but for me it was written so goofy...

I WAS however always somewhat fascinated with the Vision character, though none of these guys

seemed to be able to write him without relying on the same repeated tropes over and over again.

People always talk about 'characterization' on Marvel Comics, but seriously, you could sum up

most of these characters over a 20 year period in about two sentences.

Marvel had wanted to change the Black Panthers name so as not to be associated with the real life group,

that most conservative white John Birch types (like Roy Thomas) saw as extremely radical. They walked it back pretty quickly, and here, I guess sort of make an excuse for it...

Vision being cool, while Sir blabbers and Thor...

Why can he 'dare not injure these beings'?

Everyone is worried if the ladies are alright (pretty sure Sif could kick most of their butts), and

Vision ponders being the second who needs to punch Hawkeye in the mouth.

And they were always calling him Clint! What kind of superhero goes by his real name?

Dorks.

These 70's writers really had a hard time coming up with villains.

That's EXACTLY what I'd want to do to Thor if he kept talking in that silly language!

The Steve Englehart emotive hero.

Yawn.

Trust me, fellow nerds, this does NOT work on real life people.

You can not tell me this is good writing.

I hate to constantly complain about this Steve Englehart dialogue, villains, story pacing,

STORY, etc, etc. but he's so glorified by Marvel Zombies and I just can't understand WHY.

I try reading his work and it just seems juvenile.

Hmmm... maybe THAT's why.

Another trope constantly in use was the 'Scarlet Witch unsure what her powers would do or if they even worked'.

Very annoying. Here they work! (Even though she's unsure if they will or what they'll do). Duh.

Most of all She is... She!

LOL. Look at the silly expression on the heroes faces.

I know why I like the Vision! He says 'to hell with this stupid storyline' and takes out both of these knuckleheads in one swift move. Nice!

Hmm... why doesn't he do this to every bad guy?

Here comes the trope...

(AVENGERS #105 - cover-dated November 1972, on newsstands August 8th, 1972, with art John Buscema and Jim Mooney)

Tension! Romantic Turmoil! Brooding!

Rinse and Repeat.
